U.S. bishops issued statements expressing sorrow, warning faithful and urging prayers for unity after the excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X, or SSPX.

The prior of Oxford University’s Blackfriars Hall said the SSPX should not be confused with traditionalist groups who remained faithful to the Catholic Church.

Urging the traditionalist society not to proceed with the consecrations, Pope Leo said the Church was still “open to a path of dialogue.”

Pope Leo also expressed his optimism about the recent deal to end the war in Iran that is expected to be signed June 19 in Switzerland.

“But the Catholic Church talks to people from all denominations and faiths — and links of friendship and joint action should continue.”
