PHILADELPHIA (OSV News) — Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia told OSV News he’s “OK” following a mild medical episode during the April 2 celebration of Chrism Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.
According to Ken Gavin, chief communications officer of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the archbishop “felt light headed and left the altar” at one point in the liturgy.
“He was evaluated by a doctor and EMS personnel,” said Gavin in a statement provided to OSV News.
Gavin said the archbishop’s “vital signs are normal and he is in good health at this time with no adverse effects from likely dehydration.”
In a text message to OSV News inquiring about his condition, Archbishop Pérez said, “Thank you … I’m OK.”
In an April 2 X post, the archbishop said he was so grateful for people’s prayers and the concern shown for him.
“I felt very lightheaded during the Chrism Mass today and left the altar,” he explained. “Doctors and EMS personnel evaluated me at the Cathedral. My vital signs are normal and I feel just fine.”
He added, “I’m grateful for their help and your concern. A Blessed Triduum to you all!”
