The tiny principality of Monaco has survived invasions, revolutions and world wars, but now must reach out and share its faith and riches, Pope Leo XIV said.

In Monaco, “numerous ecclesial or civil associations that take care of children in difficulty, fragile families, the elderly, and the sick.”

Pope Leo XIV is making a day trip to Monaco, the first papal visit to the Catholic principality in the modern era.

The Oscar-winning actress retired from Hollywood after her marriage, but she did participate in three faith-based films shortly before her death.

The one-day trip will be Pope Leo’s first international journey of 2026 and only the second of his pontificate, and it carries a packed itinerary.

The Vatican said peace and care for the poor will be central themes of the African journey, which will also bring him in the footsteps of St. Augustine.
