Participation in elections is a key component of faithful citizenship for U.S. Catholics, as is advocating for free and fair elections, Catholic leaders said Sept. 11.

Support for democracy has begun a modest recovery across the Americas, according to the 2026 Pulse of Democracy report by Notre Dame and Vanderbilt researchers.

Jesuit Father John Courtney Murray played a key role in drafting Vatican II’s landmark Declaration on Religious Freedom, “Dignitatis Humanae,” in 1965.
