“May the journey towards the celebration of the second millennium of the Redemption in 2033 be undertaken together” by all the Christians, the pope said.

“War is never worthy of humanity, and it is never blessed by God, because, even if we are equipped with high-tech weapons,” the pope said in a June 26 homily.

Urging the traditionalist society not to proceed with the consecrations, Pope Leo said the Church was still “open to a path of dialogue.”

The pope also appointed Cardinal Fabio Baggio as pro-prefect of the same dicastery, with special responsibility for the Laudato si’ Higher Education Center.

The United Nations said more than 2,200 rescuers and 140 search dogs from 27 countries were working to locate trapped survivors.

The heart of the city’s celebration was the Mass with the 267th successor of Peter at the main altar of the basilica, built over the tomb of St. Peter.

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear some of Jesus’ exhortations on how to follow him and be witnesses to his kingdom.

“It’s a very good initiative of the pope and very useful for him and for the unity of the Church.”

Pope Leo XIV revived the tradition begun by St. John Paul II in 1983 by personally placing the pallium around the shoulders of newly named archbishops.

The pope said his ministry “cannot be carried out alone,” and he called on the cardinals to support him by offering frank and sincere counsel.
